The Royal Naval Medical Service memorial we unveil today commemorates the dedication that generations of 'medics', from all the constituent parts of the RNMS, have given to the care of patients and the advancement of naval medicine. The incredible progress in the treatment of the seriously ill and injured made by the current generation is built on the advances made by our predecessors and, in this, the 300th anniversary year of Lind's birth, we should also acknowledge the vital role naval 'medics' have played, through the centuries, in the prevention, as well as treatment, of illness and injury.
Around the world, and often in extreme isolation, RNMS personnel have, with skill and compassion, brought comfort and healing to sailors, marines, and countless others who have looked to them for help. This care often relies on our most junior personnel, yet they discharge their significant responsibilities to the very highest standards, whatever the circumstances.
The Royal Navy never expects anything less than the best and, in the Royal Naval Medical Service, the best is what, and who, they get. Our memorial bears witness to this simple fact.
